Division of Property

California is a community property state. This means that a marriage or the registration of a domestic partnership makes two people one legal community. The property that the couple acquires during the marriage or partnership is “community property.” Any debts that the couple acquires during the marriage or partnership also belong to the “community debt”. At divorce, community property and debt will be divided equally to both parties.
